As fifth generation Hess family, Tim and Sabrina consider themselves stewards of the brand and the land. When Donald Hess came to California in the 1970s, he was attracted to California wine and became fascinated with Mount Veeder. Although few in Napa Valley were cultivating vines at elevation, Donald Hess believed the volcanic slopes of Mount Veeder provided the ideal combination of soils and microclimates to yield elegant wines with rich, complex flavors.

A pioneer by nature, Donald Hess was determined to defy convention and pursue winemaking at elevation, so in 1978, he established The Hess Collection Winery on the site of one of the region’s oldest wineries. He took the opportunity to marry his two creative passions in life—wine and art—and he established an art gallery within the winery as a means of sharing his private art collection. Donald Hess and his wife, Ursula, met through their shared love of art, and today, Ursula’s daughter, Sabrina, and her husband, Tim, continue the family legacy of sharing wine and art and the family’s ongoing commitment to making both accessible to all.

Tim and Sabrina have chosen to call the Napa Valley their home. Tim was raised in Southern Africa and Europe, Sabrina raised in Switzerland and London, but the Napa Valley is where they have found their true calling. They strive to impart their own influence on the winery and support state-of-the-art innovations. Together, they continue to advance The Hess Collection as one of the premier family-owned and family-led companies in Napa Valley, and they are hopeful that someday their children too will carry on the Hess family heritage.

THE HESS COLLECTION

For over 40 years, The Hess Collection has been producing complex, elegant wines sourced from estate vineyards high on Mount Veeder and in the far reaches of the Napa Valley. It is from these rugged landscapes that The Hess Collection winemaking team crafts exceptional luxury wines. Guided by Donald Hess’ founding philosophy, The Hess Collection is committed to honor the land and return what we take through sustainable farming and winemaking practices.

NAPA VALLEY // CHARDONNAY

TASTE + STYLE

“The Su’skol vineyard is carefully farmed to emphasize fruit with wonderful acidity and balance. Crisp and clean our Chardonnay showcases the moderate temperatures influenced by nearby San Pablo Bay. The multiple clones display an aromatic musqué, resulting in aromas and flavors of apple, white pear and a slight touch of tropical fruits, accented by aromas of honeysuckle. We ferment only a small portion in new French Oak, and allow just a portion (28%) to undergo secondary fermentation, showcasing fruit and a round, rich mouthfeel from bâttonage over several weeks. It is a wonderful on its own, with appetizers, or as an integral part of nearly any menu.” – Dave Guffy, Director of Winemaking

VINEYARD + PRODUCTION

Named after the native Su’skol people who used the site as a meeting
place valued for nearby sources of fish and game. The location of the
Su’skol Vineyard located in Southern Napa near the San Pablo Bay,
takes advantage of the marine influence and the sandy clay and
sandstone soils, making our the 175-acre vineyard an ideal location for
growing Chardonnay. Planted exclusively to Chardonnay with nine
unique clones, yielding small berries with intense apple, pear and
citrus with crisp, vibrant acidity gives our winemakers flexibility to
adding layers of complex flavors to the wine.
